How can Jesus be God, when he calls the Father the only true God?

A Series of Answers to Common Questions

Sam Shamoun

Question:

Jesus himself admitted that the Father is the only true God. Since Trinitarians believe that the Father and the Son are distinct Persons, that they are not the same Person, wouldn’t this prove that Jesus denied that he was God?

Answer:

The person who raises this question is obviously assuming Unitarianism, that there is only one Person who is God (namely the Father), and then imposes this assumption onto the reading of the text. The only thing one has to do in order to understand Jesus’ point here is to simply read the entire context:

OTHERS
Matthew 25:40 “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”(KJV)
By Rev. Dean Beaty 1/12/09

When I think of all the burdens that some other people bear,
It humbles me dear Lord, when I think of my own care.
How often do I feel like my burdens are so great?
Others have such trial that they very seldom state.

Thank you Heavenly Father, that my trials and my cares
Can be cast upon Thy shoulders in my worship and my prayers.
Help me lift up others, whose burdens weigh them down,
For these simple acts of kindness will be rewarded with a crown.

How many of us have gone out ready to win the world, full of hope, dreams, and ambitions only to return gleaning sheaves of empty hopes and promises?

How many of us have gone out ready to win the world, full of hope, dreams, and ambitions only to return gleaning sheaves of empty hopes and promises? Raped and victimized by this thing call life? That education you invested so much time and money or that marriage of many years that ended up in heart-breaking divorce, the ministry your poured into, the people you faithfully served that turned out to be a disappointment, the business deal that never took off, or the business that went bankrupt? How about the dream of motherhood and life-long parenting, only for it to be shattered by miscarriages, the inability to conceive, or death?

Have you gone out like Naomi, which means "pleasant, lovely, and delightful", only to come back Mara, "bitter and sad"? Naomi knew the joy of going out full and the devastation of coming back empty. She knew what it felt like to have dreams dissipate like smoke rings in thin air.

Stuck in the Loop-How Do Get Past the Pains of Betrayal, Rejection, Sorrow, Disappointment, Abuse that Often Seems to Linger?

If you have been devasted by a broken relationship, well, this blogs for you. Are you a woman of God who has been taken for a loop through the Big D - Divorce? Are you trapped in the Lake of Despondency and Despair?

Married myself for almost 2 decades, serving in the ministry, Chrisitan principal, worship leader, etc., I got lost in the LOOP too. The most devastating, unimaginable thing happened to me....I was still in love, he was not. How could God allow this to happen? This is a fair question?

But I wanted and needed real, bona-fide, genuine Christian mentorship. I wanted someone to be transparent; someone who had been through. I was in dire need of help. It was a matter of life and death to my wounded soul. I wanted someone to show me how to escape the hell that tormented me every waking moment of my life.

Being Mom (how God used my children to humble me)

I worked in a daycare for 4 years. I loved it, and it was obviously what I was meant to do because I was pretty successful at teaching the little kids how to do the right thing. Then I went on to take care of kids and teenagers in their homes, then adults with disabilities in their homes. It really seemed like I was able to teach people and also to deal with difficult behaviors. I thought I was going to do pretty well as a parent.

Then I had a couple of kids and I found out I'm definitely not as cool as I thought I was. That's actually an understatement because some days my kids have looked like something on that show "Supernanny"! But here's the fun part of the story: I don't actually need to have it all together!

LORD, I'VE PRAISED YOU FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOPS AND WANT TO PRAISE YOU MORE.
I'VE PRAISED YOU FROM THE VALLEY FLOOR, WHILE HURTING TO THE CORE.
I'VE PRAISED YOU IN MY SICKNESS, AND EVEN IN MY HEALTH.
I'VE PRAISED YOU AS I LIVED AND WILL INTO MY DEATH.
I'VE PRAISED YOU THROUGH MY FEARS AND TEARS.

HOW GREAT THOU ART

As I sit here tonight and think about all that God has done for me, all I can do is smile.. God has taken me from the pits of hell and showed me just how great He is, because without Him, I am nothing! Even though tough times still come (and they always will) He is always there with us. 19 years ago, my daughter was born on Christmas Eve, and when I used to rock her, I would sing "Silent Night", and then when my kids were taken away from me...
